The Power of Basics

It never hurts to be well-prepared, and always have a basic, cute outfit as your go-to failsafe. This "emergency" wardrobe can be a lifesaver on those hectic mornings. A pair of well-fitting jeans, a basic tee, and a pair of sneakers is a great safety net to have.

You can always accessorize or layer your outfit to add your own touch, but you can never go wrong with a comfortable, basic outfit. You could layer with a cute bolero, shrug, or white shirt to elevate the fit!

Go Monochrome

One of the fastest ways to look chic is to opt for a monochrome look. This doesn't just mean dressing in all black (although that’s always a classic choice). Any color, when worn head-to-toe, gives an aura of sophistication. Experiment with various shades of the same color to add depth. It’s crucial to think about what colour suits you. Learn your skin tone! Not just the surface colour of your skin, but also the undertones. There are essentially 3 undertones, and you can find your undertone by looking at this 3-minute quick video!

Once you have figured out your skin color, try out different colors on your body, and pick the right shade for you.

People with cool tones look great in deep, vibrant colours such as blue, purple or emerald green.

Warm tones glow in earthy tones like orange and yellow.

Colour Crazy

If you do want to mess around with different colors for your outfit, it's helpful to refer to a colour wheel and choose which colours to wear based on your mood. For a harmonious, cohesive look, choose colours that are adjacent to each other on the colour-wheel. For example, since yellow and orange are next to each other, they look cohesive in this outfit.

Complementary colours are colours exactly opposite each other on the wheel contrast each other and create a vibrant, electrifying look, like green and pink.

Or, just add a pop of colour to an outfit with neutral tones, like your failsafe fit, to accent your look.

Know Your Body

It’s happened to all of us. We’ll see an outfit on Pinterest, try to recreate it, and hate the way it looks on us. Well, don’t worry! The first thing to realise about fashion is that it is unique to every person. It’s best to experiment, and first figure out what your body type is. Dress according to your body type, and customise your dream fits according to what suits you! Substitute what doesn’t work, with something that you know looks best on you. You can refer to this image for a rough idea of your body shape.

Accentuating certain body parts draws attention away from others. Let your favorite body part (and your confidence) shine! Use the power of patterns and prints to draw attention where you want it to be. Large prints and horizontal lines increase volume while small prints and vertical lines decrease volume.

Just remember, you are dressing for yourself. Trust your instincts, have an emergency wardrobe ready, and experiment to figure out what looks good on you. Once you figure out your essentials, you’ll always reach your classes on time, while still rocking an amazing outfit!
